I was a bored mom wanting to avoid the typical party sales job to earn extra money. In my quest for finding supplemental income for our summer plans I wanted to get creative. Brainstorming, I came up with the idea to incorporate my knowledge of jewelry. Looking through the jewelry and through my own collection I thought of selling my own line.
I had done some jewelry making in high school and college, and really liked it. I also had my old jewelry making supply hiding up in guest bedroom. I pulled this out and found the stuff to be still of good use. The jewels and beads were something I needed to restock on. I easily found these online through a jewelry making supply store. I came up with the designs by looking through Vogue and Cosmo to see what the models were wearing. After constructing a few pieces I started wearing them. This was my marketing plan, and it worked well among my friends. They have been coming to me to put together necklaces and what not. It is cool because they can custom design what they want and I can do it for them. I am able to charge a fifty percent profit and it is still cheaper than other retailers.
My advice for mothers wanting to find supplemental work, do something you like. This has proven to be way easier than planning parties, and I actually love doing it. My little girl has been taking part in it too, even her friends order on occasion.
